Chemistry Department Mass Spectrometry Facility

    Procedure for Sample Submission

All of the samples for mass spectral analysis must be submitted with a completely filed out Mass Spectral Analysis Submission Form. Each sample requires separate submission form. Request can be deposited outside Stratton 142. If your sample needs cold storage or special care, contact mass spectrometry personal before submitting your sample. Radioactive or highly toxic samples that require special handling will not be accepted for analysis.

Read these instructions before submitting your samples:

Full out Mass Spectral Analysis Submission Form. Provide:

Your contact information: name, research group, phone and email address.

Sample information: an unique short ID, structural formula, molecular formula and nominal weight.

Desired Analysis: nominal or accurate mass measurements. In the case of unexpected results exact mass determinations will usually not be performed until the submitter is consulted for possible formulas (or possible elements present) corresponding to the nominal mass results.

■ Method: chose the best method for your sample. Note that only  EI, CI and FAB ionization methods can be used for accurate mass measurements.

■ Solvent: choose the best single solvent for your sample.

■ Special sample instructions: provide anything characteristic for your sample that requires special handling  (toxic, air sensitive, photo or thermally unstable etc.)

■ Usually 0.5-1mg of sample is needed (smaller amounts will be accepted if that is all that you can supply). Sample can be submitted as solid crystals or neat or dried liquids in 1Dram or less vials. Include sample ID on the vial and tape it to the lower corner of the form. Unused samples will be returned to you after analysis.

You will be contacted about the results once the analysis is done.

If your methods of choice are MALDI, LC/MS or GC/MS contact mass spectrometry facility first before submitting your sample.
